Never Retreat, Never Surrender

Ancient warriors instinctively knew that their weapon was not just the sword but also their body and mind as well. It was not only the ability to wield the sword but a strong and fit body that determined their success in battle. Even with the best knowledge of tactics and skill, the sword in the hand of a warrior that was weak and passionless died at the hands of his enemy. Knock the sword from the hand of a warrior and he would still fight, his body now becoming the weapon.

Discipline was the tool the warrior used to hone his skills and train his body. It wasn't a choice; it wasn't when he felt like it, it wasn't because it was fun. He was disciplined because he wanted to live. That was the choice he faced, live as a warrior or die as a slave. No matter the weather, no matter the personal conditions, there was the training. A warriors' true weapon is discipline.

To merely exist is not the goal of a warrior. It is to dominate. To dominate over the quality and condition of his life. To no longer accept the mediocre, a soft, spoon-fed, passionless life.

But we're no longer taught dedication. We're left to flounder in our own soft bodies, our own mundane and common lives, projecting onto sports figures or fictional movie characters those elements we wished we possessed. Then, in order to salve our wounded spirits when we compare their lives (even if fictional) with our own, we come up with excuses. But excuses doesn't stop a warrior.

He trains despite the fact that he could find other things to do with his time. He trains whether he has the money to or not. He trains despite the lack of skill. He trains because he wants to truly live. It isn’t a choice to a warrior.

Many look for instant results. They decide what is the absolute minimum they can do. They become mediocre, merely surviving. How can you get excited about merely surviving? What is there to fight for? So they make do, settle.

A warrior today understands that the quality of his life, and the lives of those who depend on him, is directly related to the use of discipline. Our weapon today is not the sword, it is discipline. A warrior knows that no matter what, today he will take the necessary step toward his goals, whether he wants to or not. He sets seemingly unachievable goals for himself, then takes the daily, consistent action toward their achievement. Accepting nothing less than becoming better and better each day.

The effects of discipline are cumulative, adding up over days, months and years of his life. A warrior today does not need or live for instant success. He simply trains - each day - every day no matter the lack of desire, not tied to his ability to make time for it. A warrior trains.

He trains because it is not the outcome he is focused on but the daily action. All expectations are thrown away. A warrior simply trains because that is what he does.
